Gatsby Blog 2
In the beginning of the book, The Great Gatsby there is a epigraph that reads “Then wear the gold hat, if that will move her; If you can bounce high, bounce for her too, Till she cry, ‘Lover, gold-hatted, high-bouncing lover, I must have you!” Not only does this quote relate to the protagonist in the book, Jay Gatsby. It also contributes to the era that was going on in the 1920s where people would loan money so that they didn't have to throw parties and have fun.
When I read this epigraph, It made me think alot about the culture of today. Where money makes everything go round. The poem is telling the man to boast his money and attributes until the girl gets so impressed with you that she will fall in love with you. As I said earlier, Jay very closely relates to this poem and it almost defines who he is as a person. He is an extremely wealthy person that likes to throw big parties, buy expensive clothes and goes all out for everything he does. Throughout this blog, I will be focusing on what I believe to be the most important chapter that shows the poem applying to which in my opinion is chapter 5. I believe that there are the most examples of Gatsby trying to impress Daisy in this chapter and the ones that I will be discussing throughout the duration of my blog are. Gatsby Showing off His Mansion, and When Gatsby plays a song on the piano for her. He does this all to try to convince her and impress her to reignite the flame that the two had 5 years ago.
While reading, we learn that for 5 years Gatsby has been trying to somehow get closer to Daisy. He does this by buying a house where he can see hers across the bay. He also doesn't want to approach her because she has a husband named Tom Buchanan, even though he knows that she is not happy in that relationship. In Order to approach her again, he made a plan of joining in on a tea party between Daisy and Nick. At first when this happened, things between Daisy and Gatsby were very awkward and the tension between the two was high, but after Nick stepped back in the room, he saw how comfortable the two were around each other. Eventually, Gatsby offers to show Daisy around his mansion and this is the first time he attempts to impress her. Daisy was very impressed with Gatsby's house and in the quote “"I love it, but I don't see how you live there all alone." It shows how she feels about such a large, palace-like mansion just for one person like Gatsby. As they are walking through the House, Daisy is also impressed by his bedroom, especially his closet and the picture of him in his room where he is wearing his Yacht Uniform.
Another time where Gatsby attempts to impress Daisy is when they are at his house and he gets a professional pianist to play the piano for the both of them. The quote” we'll have Klipspringer play the piano."’ Shows how he does this in attempt to show of to daisy by telling him to play, while they both sat down on a couch relaxing and smoking cigarettes, even though I only went over these two options through my blog, I feel like there is many more times where gatsby is see showing off and trying to impress people with his luxury lifestyle. His clothing, his parties, his gifts, and lastly, How he treats people that he likes.
