The Great Gatsby Blog 1
In the first three chapters of the book, The Great Gatsby, there are a total of three parties. These parties occur near New York City in Long Island. Nick, the narrator of this book, lives in the West Egg of Long Island, while the more fashionable side of Long Island is the East Egg. Each one of the parties represents a different group of people during the 1920s or otherwise known in history as the roaring twenties, named this because of the parties and the very progressive ideologies throughout the time period. The people that hosted the three different parties are: Tom Buchanan, Myrtle, and lastly Gatsby.
In the first party that we read in the book, Tom’s. Was hosted by Tom Buchanan and his wife, Daisy. The party was held in their house which was described in the book as “even more elaborate than I expected, a cheerful red and white Georgian Colonial mansion overlooking the bay.” This house is located on the East Egg, showing their conservative beliefs and how they have wealth, not rich. Some of the guests at this party were Jordan, Daisy, and Nick. Jordan was a professional golfer that seemed very unamused and uninterested from the party, and Daisy had the same attitude as jordan, as shown in the quote ”The other girl, Daisy, made an attempt to rise—she leaned slightly forward with a conscientious expression—then she laughed, an absurd, charming little laugh, and I laughed too and came forward into the room. "I'm p-paralyzed with happiness." Tom was very familiar with the people at this party because he knew Tom from Yale and he knew Daisly because they were both family. In this party shit goes down and in the middle of the gathering, Tom’s fling hits his line and it causes Daisy to get mad at Tom, storming out and arguing. After this, the party ended very awkwardly.
The next party that occurred in the book was hosted by Tom’s Side Piece Myrtle. This party occurs in her cheap apartment that was very trashy. Her living room was described as “crowded to the doors with a set of tapestried furniture entirely too large for it”. The people that were at her party are Catherine, The Mckees and other friends of hers. This party was very crowded and in a way, very shitty. Nick also describes getting drunk for the second time ever here, hinting that the only way to get through the party was getting drunk. This party ended in a very violent way, when Myrtle, Tom Buchanan’s side piece chanted Tom’s Wife name Daisy. Tom reacted to this by hitting her in the face and getting angry.
The last and final party was at Gatsby's House, His house was very large and fancy and boasted his wealth and money. In the book, his house is described as “it was a factual imitation of some Hôtel de Ville in Normandy, with a tower on one side, spanking new under a thin beard of raw ivy, and a marble swimming pool and more than forty acres of lawn and garden.” The Party was open to the public so anyone could come but in reality only one person was truly invited to come. This person was Nick and Gatsby wanted to spend time with him. The other guests that showed up just went for a good time and were seen eating and partying without really caring for Gatsby or for who he was.
If I had to go to one of the parties, it would have to be Gatsby's party. I feel more inclined to go to this party because of all of the luxury and all of the people. I also feel like this party didn't end in a weird fashion like the other ones did and I feel like I can enjoy it. It seems like the stereotypical party of the “Roaring Twenties” and seems the most fun of them all due to the fact that everything was very intricate, with Meals, Drinks and Dancers along with a orchestra.
