Richard Branson, The famous entrepreneur wrote a letter for anyone who could be reading it, through this letter, Richard uses many means and literary devices to get his point across and overall motivate and inspire the reader of the letter on how to be happier. In the letter he explains that happiness is not accomplishments or goals and what you're doing but enjoying the moment around you. I will be focusing on many literary devices like language, form and lastly structure that the author used to make his letter stronger and more moving.
Throughout the length of the letter, Richard Branson used form to make his letter stronger and move the reader more. To begin with, Richard wrote in the form of a letter to make the reader feel like it was written for them and to imitate a conversation between them. He also uses small paragraphs to make the letter feel more personal and to keep the reader's attention. For example, Richard Started off his letter with “dear stranger” and said, “You don't know me but I hear you going through a tough time” showing the beginning of a conversation and attaching an emotional connection between them. Not only this, but another reason as to why the author would want to write the letter in the second person. This could be to keep the author aware that they matter, and to stray away from focusing on Richard's life experiences and examples.
The author used structure throughout the letter in order to keep the reader awake and to keep the reader interested in the letter. Richard achieved this by making his paragraphs short and to the point. Something else that he did to keep the reader interested was having his sentences short. An example of a short sentence is “Holding my new grandchild's tiny hands.” The short sentences keep the reader engaged in the text and aware and focused on what the author is trying to say throughout the story.
Lastly, The author used language through their letter to make the reader feel closer to him. Since the author's letter is written in the form of a conversation between them and the reader. He uses words like “talents” and “happiness will follow” to inspire the reader and provide them reassurance on how to be happy. He also mentions everyday things that are important to himself and it shows that it isn't always the important goals in life but the small little things that make everything better and more enjoyable. He uses words like these to show the reader that it could all get better. This is helpful because it can make the reader happy since they are in a rough patch in life and need to find happiness. The author also provides credibility since he was once trying to find happiness in stress-inducing goals and jobs but has since learned to enjoy the small things and moments.
In conclusion, this letter used many different forms of literary devices to get its point across, the author used each one to help inspire the reader and make them a happier and better person. Each one of the forms contributed to making the letter stronger and stronger and immersing the reader into reading it and keeping them interested. Thanks to the use of these, the letter was able to be effective and interesting as well as informative and helpful to the reader.
